Baroque Arabesque skilfully blends a diverse tapestry of European Baroque, oriental music, and Sephardic songs, creating a captivating and varied musical experience. From this perspective, the ensemble discovers entirely new ways of performing Baroque music. With a rich imagination and vitality, the ensemble strives for freshness and creativity and with dedication explores unexplored musical territories, giving new life to the baroque genre through a fusion with oriental influences. Baroque Arabesque was founded in 2021 in Vienna by the Italian harpsichordist Marinka Brecelj. The ensemble boasts a lineup of exceptionally talented musicians, including the extraordinary Turkish-Kurdish singer, Özlem Bulut, whose captivating vocals add a unique dimension to the ensemble’s performances. Accompanying her are the skilled violinist, Julia Kainz, the rhythmic expertise of Pat Feldner on percussion, and the soulful sounds of Pia Pircher on the viola da gamba. The ensemble's recent CD released by Gramola was nominated for the ICMA (International Classical Music Awards). They recently performed at Wiener Konzerthaus and Antiqua Bolzano festival among other venues. Baroque Arabesque garnered rave reviews from prominent media outlets like Ö1 (Cis Des), Pizzicato, and Web classic, further solidifying their reputation as an outstanding musical ensemble.

Özlem Bulut started her career as street musician. At the age of 14 she visited the Music Conservatory of the Mersin Üniversitesi, afterwards she studies opera in Istanbul and Vienna, and performed at the Volksoper Wien, Opera Bastille Paris and Wiener Staatsoper. Awarded with the Austrian World Music and the Mia Award, the singer is regularly guest at renown and international stages with her versatile projects. With her own project the singer and musician Özlem Bulut is connecting elements of Anatolian and oriental music with Jazz, Pop, and Soul since 2008. Performances at the Donauinselfest, the ORF Radiokulturhaus and Porgy and Bess followed. With the project „Baroque Arabesque“ she is the first time in contact with the music of the Baroque and trying to find a new soundscape with historical instruments.
Julia Kainz grew up in Gmünd, a small town in the north of Austria at the Czech border. There she attended elementary school and high school as well as music school in the subjects violin, piano and ballet. At an early age she was trained in chamber music and orchestra playing in South Bohemia. Julia graduated as a Master of Arts in violin and music pedagogy from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she studied with Michael Frischenschlager and Klaus Maetzl. She received further training at master classes with Eszter Perenyi and Michail Gantwarg and in early music with Gunar Letzbor, Marianne Rônez and Michi Gaigg. During her studies she took part in national and international competitions and toured Europe’s festivals of classical music with the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester. Beside playing with chamber music groups and orchestras Julia specialized in performing world music and early music mainly of the Meditaranean Area and Near East, but also of Spain and South America. Another focus she found in Viennese Music (Schrammelmusik, Wiener Lied). She has performed in Europe, China, North America, and South America. Julia Kainz is a teacher for violin, piano and Childrens’ orchestra at the Ritter van Köchel Musikschule in Krems.
The viola da gamba player Pia Pircher, born in Vienna, is fascinated since her early childhood by sounds and music. She studied at the Royal College of Music London, the Musik Hochschule Trossingen and the University Mozarteum. Based on her keen interest for the aesthetic and philosophical origin as well as the cultural background of arts, Pia completed a doctorate in music and is working regularly with composers. She received several prices and awards for her work. Pia is performing internationally as soloist at the London Handel Festival, the Queens Gallery London/Buckingham Palace, the Styriarte and Trigonale Festival as well as the Brighton Early Music Festival Live! And the Fringe Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht. Pia was appointed Associate Professor of Music at the American University in Cairo/Egypt.
Pat Feldner is a multi-percussionist in the field of World Music, Jazz, Rock, Folk, and Early Music. He started as percussionist, taking lessons with Dieter Herfert (Vienna Conservatory), focused later Hand Percussion, and studied in Varanasi/India the classical Indian Tabla with Nandlal Mishra, Ramchandra Sharma (All India Radio & TV) and Chauggan Lal Mishra. He discovered the world of the frame drum and is interested in historical and oriental percussion as well.
Marinka Brecelj, harpsichord, direction, and arrangement, is passionately committed to enriching historical performance practice with fresh impulses. Her captivating performances are skilfully infused with a pronounced sense of creative innovation, expertly blending various styles and cultures. Born in Bolzano, Marinka Brecelj discovered her passion for music at an early age. She received a diploma in piano and then continued her education as a harpsichordist and pianist in Vienna and Milan. Simultaneously, she studied musicology at the University of Bologna, where she earned her doctorate with honours, completing a dissertation on modern harpsichord music. Her extensive repertoire includes not only Baroque works but also contemporary compositions, with some pieces dedicated to her.
