Laterna Magica (BE)

The Laterna Magica ensemble is composed of graduate musicians or teachers in the higher conservatories of Brussels, Paris, and The Hague. Favouring the interpretation of trio sonatas from the repertoire of the Baroque period, the ensemble develops the historical tradition of arrangements and transcriptions and gives it a very special place in its concert programmes. The first recording of the set, Exercitium, transcriptions of Bach work, published under the Solal label, is dedicated to Johann-Sebastian Bach. The second, Opera Minima. Handel with care, published by Paraty, presents transcriptions of Handel's operas in the spirit of those published by the London editor John Walsh. Laterna Magica performs regularly in various Belgian and European festivals and halls (Mosan Summer Festival, Midis-Minimes Festival, Musical Autumn at Spa Festival de Lasne, Mubafa Festival, Musical strolls by Rixensart, Palace of Fine Arts in Charleroi , Summer festivities of early music in Prague, Natural History Museum in Berlin, Bach en Combrailles festival ....) as well as several times in Asia (Hanoi, Vietnam, New Delhi and Pondicherry, India, Singapore, National Center for the Perfoming Arts, Beijing, China, Chuncheon international early music festival, Chuncheon, South Korea) and in Latin America (Festivals Encuentro musical boliviano-europeo in La Paz and Misiones de Chiquitos in Santa-Cruz, Bolivia, Esteban Salas festival 2007 in Havana, Cuba, Francophonie Brasilia Week, Alliance Française de Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil). During these trips beyond our borders, the musicians of the ensemble also developed into an educational activity of conferences and master classes, on baroque and contemporary music.

Nathalie Houtman graduated with the highest distinction in recorder at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. She studied for a year in Amsterdam, before heading to The Hague where she obtained her Master of Music. Her interest in extra-European music from oral traditions led her to India to study Bansuri (Indian flute), to Paris, for the Shakuhachi flute (Japanese flute) as well as the xiao (Chinese flute). Nathalie Houtman is recorder teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

Laura Pok was born in 1976. In 1994, she entered the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, where she higher diplomas in recorder (class of Frédéric de Roos), and chamber music with great distinction. Laura Pok performs and records with various ensembles She has given numerous concerts in Europe, America, and Asia, as well as courses and masterclasses on the recorder. Her discography includes Exercitium, transcriptions of Bach work, Handel with care and Mimesis with the Laterna Magica ensemble. Laura Pok teaches recorder in music schools and reading-transposition and recorder consort at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.

Ronan Kernoa obtained a Master's degree in historical cello with great distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He then studied the viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken and finally with Philippe Pierlot in the same institution and obtained again a master's degree with great distinction as well as the Ingeborg Köberle Prize. He is taking part of concert all around the world with many ensembles. Ronan Kernoa made recording for many labels: Sony Classical Vivarte, K 617, Ricercar, Accent, Challenge Records,Ramée, Mirare, Harmonia Mundi, Alpha.

Raphaël Collignon is a harpsichordist, pianist, and teacher. After winning a First Prize in piano and harpsichord at the Paris Conservatoire, he turned to jazz and early music. He continued his studies in Strasbourg, and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He performs as a continuo player with various specialized ensembles, for orchestra and chamber music. In addition to his musical activities, Raphaël runs workshops on deep ecology and on bringing greater awareness and harmony to relationships and emotions. Raphaël has been an accompanist at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels since 2019.
