Antiphonus (HR)

17. 7. 2014

The concert presents parts of Claudio Monteverdi’s madrigal opus – secular where the theme allows for it, and sacral in some parts which have been preserved up to this day, with an insertion by Aquilino Coppini, Monteverdi’s friend, a poet and musician, whose employer was Saint Charles Borromeo, one of the great leaders of the Counter-Reformation. The Milanese Church recognised the potential of the madrigal, its power and its freshness of expression, and first used these qualities to give Counter-Reformation a social and cultural edge by adding a new sacral text inspired by the lyric original. The comments and intermezzi of this beautiful music, which is intellectually and emotionally heavy for the listener, will be carried out by Edin Karamazov, who will perform Piccinni’s and Gaultier’s pieces on the lute.
