The Theorbo Between the Court and the New World

Andrej Jovanić performed with the Musica Antiqua Neoplantensis ensemble at the Seviqc festival on 20 August 2026 in the Barbara of Celje Hall in Celje.

Last night, he gave a solo theorbo recital at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zemun. Judging by the audience’s response, the concert unfolded in an exceptional atmosphere.

The concert, entitled The Theorbo Between the Court and the New World, was conceived as a musical journey from the French Baroque and the splendour of European courts to echoes from across the Atlantic, featuring music by Robert de Visée, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Gaspar Sanz and other composers. At the end of the programme, the sound of the Baroque theorbo met the Brazilian rhythms of the 20th century in Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Mazurka-Choro.

From Versailles to the New World, from Baroque ceremonial to contemporary musical expression, the theorbo revealed itself as an instrument capable of connecting different periods, cultures and musical worlds.
